The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Committee on Local Government and Decentralisation, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take concrete steps to address recurring audit irregularities.

Speaking at the opening of the committee’s public hearings on the annual statements of audit committees of MMDAs, Asenso-Boakye said audit findings should not become an annual exercise in which the same weaknesses are identified without meaningful corrective action.

The two-day hearings are examining financial infractions contained in the 2025 Auditor-General’s Report involving the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and various MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region.

Asenso-Boakye said Parliament’s responsibility should go beyond identifying irregularities to examining why the weaknesses persist and whether recommendations from previous audits have been implemented.

He stressed that the value of the audit process lies in whether its recommendations result in stronger internal controls, improved financial management and better use of public resources.

The Bantama MP also called for appropriate accountability where audit findings involve the misuse of public funds or breaches of established procedures.

At the same time, he said Parliament should support institutional reforms where recurring challenges are linked to capacity or systemic weaknesses.

He urged officials of the assemblies and the parliamentary committee to engage constructively during the hearings to identify the causes of recurring irregularities and develop sustainable solutions.
