Former presidential staffer and New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications figure Dennis Miracles Aboagye has raised concerns over a reported cocaine arrest in Amsterdam involving a shipment said to have originated from Ghana.
In a Facebook post, Aboagye claimed that the cocaine had an estimated street value of about US$500 million.
“Another cocaine arrest in Amsterdam from Ghana. Street value of the cocaine is about $500m,” he wrote.
Aboagye further expressed concern about Ghana’s growing association with international drug-trafficking cases, describing the development as unfortunate.
His comments come amid heightened scrutiny of several recent narcotics cases linked to Ghana. Authorities have separately investigated major cocaine seizures involving shipments connected to Ghana, including a case in France involving about four tonnes of suspected cocaine.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has said it is working with domestic and international law-enforcement agencies to investigate suspected trafficking networks and disrupt the people and infrastructure behind the trade.
The reported Amsterdam case and Aboagye’s comments are likely to add to ongoing public discussions about Ghana’s role in international narcotics trafficking and the measures needed to strengthen controls.
