Burkina Faso Inaugurates First Gold Refinery to Boost Local Processing

Burkina Faso has inaugurated its first gold refinery as the military-led government steps up efforts to process more of the country’s mineral resources locally.

The Raffinor-BF facility has an initial refining capacity of up to 164 tonnes of gold annually, with plans to eventually increase its capacity to 515 tonnes per year.

The refinery is expected to play a key role in the government’s efforts to strengthen local control over the country’s gold industry and increase the economic value derived from its mineral resources.

According to the government, the facility will also help reduce gold smuggling, improve monitoring of the sector and ensure that a greater share of the value generated from gold remains within Burkina Faso.

Gold is one of Burkina Faso’s most important natural resources and a major contributor to the country’s economy.

The move to expand local processing is part of broader efforts by the government to increase state participation in the mining sector and maximise the benefits of the country’s mineral wealth.

The planned expansion of Raffinor-BF to 515 tonnes annually would significantly increase Burkina Faso’s capacity to refine gold domestically.

The development comes as several African countries seek to strengthen their control over natural resources by increasing local processing and reducing reliance on exporting raw minerals.

For Burkina Faso, the refinery represents an important step in its strategy to capture more value from its gold production while strengthening oversight of the industry.
